Why Denver Online High School

Denver Online High School is offered as an option to students who are not interested in attending a large high school and are willing to sacrifice a broad selection of electives, athletics, and activities in order to benefit from small class sizes in a more personal environment. Denver Online High School is a 4-year accredited high school with the same standards and graduation requirements as all other DPS High Schools. Students at Denver Online High School complete their diploma by earning credits online in the comfort and privacy of their own home.

Denver Online High School Works For Students Who:

  • are at or near grade level but want a different social setting to pursue their education.
  • know they are smart and want to go to college or participate in other educational opportunities.
  • express a desire and commitment to be a Denver Online High School student.
  • want to earn a high school diploma but would benefit from more support and encouragement.
  • feel that they don’t “fit in” at a large high school and/or are tired of distractions from other students talking to each other and teachers answering questions for other students.
  • have few connections at their home school but desire to earn their high school diploma.
  • have struggled with some social or academic part of school in the past but are willing to make a commitment to participate regularly and graduate from high school in an online environment.
  • may be slightly behind in credits but still within reach of graduating on time.
  • have special needs that are beyond their current school’s capacity to help.
  • need and want a closer connection with teachers in order to succeed.
  • have been home-schooled and are in need of or are ready for additional high school support.
  • are deeply involved in an extracurricular activity that is incompatible with traditional schooling.
  • may find it very distracting and difficult to concentrate in a traditional setting.
  • prefer to work at a different pace than that offered in traditional high school setting.
  • have family obligations, or who have become parents
  • are involved in competitive sports, art, music, or other activities that require a flexible schedule
  • want more flexibility, choice and ownership in their education
  • are bored, unengaged, or behind because traditional school, classrooms and instruction are not the best fit for them
  • are gifted students and want a faster pace or more challenging material
  • are special needs students who need a modified program, or a personalized pace with a minimum of service needs
  • have physical or behavioral differences, social or health issues that prevents or limits their access to a traditional high school program.

Denver Online High School Is NOT For Students Who:

  • are being forced to attend school by his/her parent, guardians or court order.
  • have need of an extensive in-school counseling, therapy program or specially-designed instruction that the school cannot provide.
  • want an “easy way out” of high school by attending a credit factory or a place where credits can be gained more easily than the larger comprehensive high schools.
  • are hiding out or trying to avoid school due to Truancy court, other attendance issue, and discipline issues, not related to health issues.
  • are 2 or more years behind in graduation credits.
  • do not have regular 24 hour access to a computer and/or internet service.
  • do not have parent, guardian, mentor or other adult support system to encourage, motivate and provide needed resources.
  • do not have time or are unable to make time to participate in their online classes 5 days a week 4 hours per day.
