Madison James: New Zealand Migrant Farm Worker

See the following message from Madison James and how Denver Online HS fits into her life.

I’m a proud graduate of Denver Online School. When I enrolled in March 2012 my goal was to be able to travel to New Zealand starting in October 2012 and for the next seven months. I was already dissatisfied with the structured High School I had previously been attending but with New Zealand in the mix I knew I couldn’t continue there. Denver Online made it possible for me to have hands on learning in the field that I was most interested in and made it possible for me to take my high school classes during my travels and still graduate with my class.

My plan was to backpack around New Zealand while working as a migrant farm worker for accommodations and food. In the first three and a half months I was steadily going from one farm to another learning about sustainable organic agriculture. Not only did I learn from people making a living off of growing food, but I also adapted to a culture with a whole new set of rules. While I was in New Zealand not only did I farm but also was a migrant worker with people from all over the world, picking grapes for a popular wine distributor. Although traveling to a foreign country was difficult at times I am extremely thankful that I was able to have this experience. My dream is to continue to travel to farms around the world and ultimately own my own farm that offers organic food to people of all walks of life.
